Suzuka is a figure-eight layout — the only one in F1 — with the track crossing over itself via a bridge. The legendary Esses in sector one are among the most challenging high-speed corners anywhere, taken flat-out by the bravest drivers. The 130R corner and Degner curves further test commitment. It's a drivers' circuit through and through.
Built by Honda as a test track in 1962, Suzuka has hosted the Japanese Grand Prix since 1987 (alternating with Fuji briefly). Many World Championships have been decided here, often in dramatic fashion. The track is beloved by drivers for its challenging, rewarding layout and by fans for Japan's legendary enthusiasm and respect for the sport.
Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost collided at the chicane. Prost walked away, but Senna restarted, won, then was disqualified — handing the championship to Prost in one of F1's most controversial moments.
Kimi Räikkönen charged through the field from 17th and passed Giancarlo Fisichella on the final lap for victory in one of the greatest comeback drives ever.
Max Verstappen led from start to finish at a circuit Red Bull has historically dominated, extending his championship lead.
